Gorgas House Museum was occupied by the Gorgas family from 1879 -1953.  Within the following year, The Gorgas Memorial Board and the University of Alabama Board of Trustees petitioned the state legislature to have the building dedicated as a museum in memory of the Gorgas family.

With such quick succession to a Museum in 1954, and with Gorgas family support, the Gorgas House has a significant collection of Gorgas family artifacts and memorabilia that is managed by the Curator of the Gorgas House Collection and the Department of Museum Research & Collections. Most pieces in the Gorgas House Collection are from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
